California Fire Safe Council

Fire Preparedness

CHALLENGE

Properly preparing homes and properties for fire season is an important part of protecting property and saving lives, but much of the information and many of the steps are new.

Additionally, it’s easy to forget critical steps once a fire is near and evacuation is imminent. Based on our engagement in the rural regions of California, four waters media has supported the California Fire Safe Council to prepare local communities.

APPROACH

We developed poster-sized, mailable brochures describing new the guidelines for both Home Hardening and Defensible Space, in multiple languages. These were sent to local Fire Safe Councils around the state and hosted on the newly-designed website.

We also proposed a poster-sized checklist that could be hung in a garage and a pocket companion that can be kept in any sized bag. In addition to the Fire Safe Council information on hand, we reviewed additional preparedness guides to make sure we hit the most important points. Both tools feature QR codes to a website page with expanded guidelines, and the poster also includes space for local information.
