Take Back Red California PAC

Support for Rural County Democrats

CHALLENGE

California Rural County Democrats were largely invisible to the Party and its leaders. Rural communities had less support from Statewide Democratic leaders, a difficult time securing resources to support candidates, and did not have the training to run campaigns in tough districts. When resources and support were brought into a county for a specific campaign, the team generally operated without local engagement or input, and left without any support for local organizers.

APPROACH

Inspired by overwhelming need and enthusiasm, the Take Back Red California (TBRC) PAC was formed to support local Democratic organizers and candidates in rural counties. We raised resources from safer, “blue” counties and used them to support rural county candidates, held awareness-raising events (both independently and concurrent with the California Democratic Party statewide events), hosted national trainers in rural communities for multi-day trainings, and supported “up-hill” candidates with “boots on the ground.” As Chair of TBRC, four waters led trainings, facilitated local and statewide events, and advocated on behalf of rural communities and candidates. Ultimately, we were successful in building a much broader recognition of the importance of California’s rural regions.
